WWDC-AM was a middle-of-the-road station in the 1960s.

One could argue that WWDC started Beatlemania in this country. It was the first U.S. station to air “I Want To Hold Your Hand” in 1963.

Through the 1970s, WWDC was a Top 40 station. In the early 1980s, it simulcast portions of sister station WWDC-FM, which carried a rock format as “DC101.” A few years later, it became an adult standards station.

When longtime beautiful music station WGAY-FM flipped formats in 1999, WWDC-AM became WGAY-AM, keeping its adult standards format. Clear Channel acquired the station in 2001. It became a business news station in 2001 and changed the call letters to the current WWRC.

A flip to progressive talk in 2005 was a failure. The station was branded as “Obama 1260” as it carried the progressive talk format through the 2009 inauguration, but earned low ratings.

After another flip to business talk, Salem Communications bought the station in 2010. It launched the current conservative talk format on WWRC.
