WTIX

WTIX spent its first days on the air reading the phone book to get attention. WDSU had number one afternoon show called The Top 20 on 1280. Todd Storz took the tight playlist formula from KOWH, doubled the number, and the first “Top 40” station was born. With only 250 watts way up at 1450kHz, WTIX debuted with a 50 share.

Robert Mitchell on July 22, 1969.

Even though WNOE sponsored The Beatles’ historic concert, WTIX elected to distribute flyers that suggested they had sponsored the event.

The WTIX "Thirty" for the week of May 5, 1973.

From Bob Walker's New Orleans Airwaves Channel: From 1967-1989, the studios and offices of WTIX were located at 332 Carondelet St. in New Orleans, on the 4th floor of the Columbia Homestead building at Carondelet & Union St. When WTIX moved out in 1989, no one ever else moved in. The rooms were used for storage and fell into disrepair. This visit back in 2009 shows a very detailed look at how the home of the Mighty 690 looked 20 years later, in 2009. Captions reflect the years of 1968 - 1972, as does the audio, which represents only the announcers who were available in Walker's collection.

Audio: Buzz Bennett, Skip Broussard, Sy Jenkins, Robert Mitchell, Jon Reed, Michael Green, Bob Walker, Tom Cheney, J. Andrew Michaels, Don Anthony, Bill Murvin (RC Cola spot), Lou Saint, Craig Roberts & Jim Swiler.
